What is silk?

Silk is an animal fiber produced by the silkworm. The newborn silkworm is a worm that only eats mulberry leaves. In 3-4 weeks, it becomes an adult and starts looking for a place to prepare its cocoon. The silk work secretes a thin drool that solidifies as it comes in contact with air and, as the head moves in a figure-8 movement, the drool is laid out in layers to form the cocoon.

The silkworm takes 3-4 days to create a cocoon which is formed in circular layers by one single strand. Within the center of the cocoon, the silkworm transforms first into a chrysalid and then into a butterfly.

There are three different types of silk thread: the silk resulting from silkworm farming which is the most regular and most used; the tussah silk obtained from silkwork cocoons which live and breed naturally and which produce a thick and irregular silk thread; and double silk (shantung) obtained from the natural phenomenon of two silkworms working together one single cocoon and which produce a unique silk thread with iridescent fibers.

Silk naturally reflects light which creates a matchless splendor and a great richness in shades. The elasticity of the silk thread gives the cloth a particular resistance and, when it comes into contact with air, the material maintains its freshness and needs no ironing. Given its softness, silk allows the perfect molding of the material as well as elegant draping over the body. It is also hypoallegenic and maintains body heat to keep you warm on chilly days and nights.
