Hand crafted glass mosaic portrait of the Madonna of the Goldfinch by Raphael
The original painting of the Madonna del Cardellino was done by the Italian Renaissance artist Raphael in 1505. Its home is the Uffizi gallery in Florence and is a stunning work of art. Here it has been reproduced using small pieces of Venetian glass from Murano. The technique used dates back to the end of the 17th century and remains completely unchanged since then. The Italian term is called “Mosaico Minuto Romano” and first evolved in Rome in the Vatican school by an artist called Raffelli. The glass is cut into small squares and placed carefully in position to create this incredible masterpiece. The wonderful array of colours create a magical aura and there is a special spiritual feeling that emanates from this captivating work.
