Description
Hand crafted glass mosaic portrait of Madonna with Child and Two Angels by Filippino Lippi
The original painting of the Madonna delle Rocce was done by the Italian Renaissance artist Filippo Lippi in 1455. Its home is in the most famous art gallery in the world, the Uffizi gallery in Florence. Here it has been reproduced using small coloured Venetian glass tiles from Murano. Murano is a tiny island just off Venice and has the most renowned glass producing factory in the world. The technique using these pieces of cut glass dates back to the end of the 17th century and was first used in Rome by an artist called Raffelli. The Italian term is called “Mosaico Minuto Romano. Each individual piece of glass is carefully cut to shape and placed carefully in position creating a masterpiece of intense beauty. The contrasting colours are expertly arranged to enhance the portrait to its highest limits and it’s almost as if she is in the room with you. This is a true testament to the unqualified skill of the craftsman and its uniqueness will be an endless talking point.
