Description
Hand crafted glass mosaic portrait of The Pity by Michelangelo
La Pietà is perhaps one of the most famous sculptures ever to have been created. Michaelangelo was only 24 years old when he carved it and in fact it was the only one he actually signed. Here it has been reproduced using small pieces of coloured Venetian glass from Murano. Murano is a tiny island just off Venice and has the most renowned glass producing factory in the world. The technique using these pieces of cut glass dates back to the end of the 17th century and was first used in Rome by an artist called Raffelli. The Italian term is called “Vaticano mosaico Romano. Each individual piece of glass is carefully cut to shape and placed carefully in position creating a masterpiece of intense beauty. See the Virgin’s face emanates sweetness, serenity and a majestic acceptance of this immense sorrow that has befallen her. The shades of grey and black have been cleverly combined to create this awe inspiring mosaic masterpiece. Its dramatic appeal will captivate the soul.
