Glass Mosaic: "THE DELPHIC SIBYL BY MICHELANGELO"

Item 2100 - Cod MV16x22-DEI

Description

Hand crafted glass mosaic portrait of the Delphic Sibyl in the Sistine Chapel
The Delphic Sibyl was a legendary figure who gave prophecies in the sacred precinct of Apollo at Delphi located on the slopes of Mount Parnassus. Pausanias claimed that the Sibyl was "born between man and goddess, daughter of sea monsters and an immortal nymph". Others said she was the sister or daughter of Apollo. This is just one of the sibyls that Michaelangelo chose to portray as a fresco on the magnificent ceiling in the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome. She was perhaps one of the most admired because of her physical beauty. Here it has been reproduced by our expert craftsman as a mosaic comprising tiny pieces of Venetian glass from Murano. The technique using these pieces of cut glass dates back to the end of the 17th century and was first used in Rome by an artist called Raffelli. The Italian term is called “Vaticano mosaico Romano. Each individual piece of glass is carefully cut to shape and placed carefully in position creating a masterpiece of intense beauty. To look at the original and then study this masterpiece, the likeness is absolutely amazing.

Please note that the frame used here is not necessarily the frame that you will receive. They are frames all made by hand and the artist will choose the frame that best matches the mosaic picture.
