Description
Hand crafted Florentine mosaic portrait (round)
This spectacular mosaic is unmistakeably Florentine. The technique is known in Italian as “commesso Fiorentino” and is totally unique to this part of Italy. The word commesso means committed which is from the Latin verb to unite or to connect. Starting from a sketch, the hard stones are selected for colour and tones depending on the subject. In this mosaic for example, the water is made of green jasper found near the River Arno. The stones are then cut by hand with a wooden bow which has an iron thread across it. These techniques that our master craftsmen use date back more than 500 years to the period of the Renaissance. From the way the slabs are cut, to the way they are glued together, the whole process requires an enormous amount of skill and patience. To own a precious Florentine mosaic would certainly make your living room a very special place and this would truly be one of your most treasured possessions.
